Our interactive program allows faculty and staff members to develop and practice bystander intervention prevention skills in-person or through an eLearning module.

Our program approaches all community members as potential bystanders or witnesses to risky situations and teaches prosocial (positive, appropriate, and safe) ways to prevent or intervene. We partner with you so that the programs are customized to reflect the culture and demographics of your participants and campus.

  • Bringing in the Bystander® College Program – specifically designed for student audiences, grounded in campus life, and built to resonate with young adults navigating peer dynamics.

  • Bystanders At Work®: Faculty & Staff Bystander Invervention Workplace Program – tailored for employees, incorporating workplace norms, power dynamics, and institutional responsibilities.

Together, these programs form a unified prevention strategy.

They reflect the reality that students, faculty, and staff all have important roles to play in shaping campus culture—but those roles look different, and so must the training.

When implemented side-by-side, these programs:

Addressing Unique Roles & Responsibilities: Bystander Intervention for Faculty & Staff

While the Bringing in the Bystander® (BITB) College Program is a highly effective, evaluated, and research-backed tool for college student populations, it was not designed for faculty or staff audiences.

The student-focused BITB program:

  • Uses peer-to-peer scenarios relevant to student life.

  • Reflects the social contexts and decision-making of young adults.

  • Was evaluated specifically for its impact on student behavior.

BITB College cannot be delivered to faculty and staff. Faculty and staff operate in a fundamentally different context—with professional roles, workplace hierarchies, and reporting obligations that require a completely different approach.

That’s why we created the new Bystanders At Work: Faculty & Staff Workplace Program—a prevention solution for all employees in higher education.

This program recognizes:

  • Recognizes the power dynamics and responsibilities unique to employees.

  • Uses real-world workplace scenarios grounded in focus group feedback from your staff and faculty

  • Equips participants with concrete skills to intervene, report, and support others appropriately.

  • Incorporates the real-life challenges faculty and staff face when deciding how and when to intervene - related to another employee’s or students’ behavior.

  • Recognizes the need for practical tools that align with HR and institutional  protocols,  priorities, and policies.

  • Builds a workplace culture of accountability, civility, and shared responsibility among employees.

In short: A student program can’t serve a workplace audience effectively. To truly engage your team - and avoid the risks of ineffective or inappropriate training - you need a program tailored to the faculty and staff environment, voice, and responsibilities.

Training Options

Soteria Solutions offers two options for the Train-the-Trainer workshops that will prepare your team to facilitate this program on your campus. Participants will learn the curriculum in depth and be empowered to train other future facilitators within your campus community.

Attendees typically include staff and community partners who are responsible for coordinating and/or facilitating workplace sexual assault and harassment prevention and similar programs on your campus and in the community.

Whether you choose an in-person or virtual format, both workshops will equip your trainers with research-based strategies, practical tools, and certification upon completion, empowering them to lead an effective bystander intervention program within your organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • BITB College has been rigorously evaluated for its impact on college student populations, focusing on their peer relationships, social interactions, and the settings in which they are most likely to encounter situations requiring bystander intervention. Faculty and staff operate in different social and professional structures, making student-focused content less relevant to their lived experiences and responsibilities.

  • While both students and faculty/staff may witness or respond to problematic behaviors, their roles and responsibilities differ significantly:

    • Students primarily engage with one another in social settings, including residence halls, dining halls, on and offcampus events, as well as in classrooms and academic settings. Their interventions are usually peer-to-peer and informed by social norms.

    • Faculty & Staff navigate bystander opportunities involving both students and professional workplace relationships, including colleagues, supervisors, and institutional policies. Their interventions may involve reporting, workplace policies, and professional codes of conduct.

      • Students intervene as peers, which allows for informal social influence and direct engagement in peer-led prevention strategies.

      • In contrast, faculty and staff often serve in roles with formal obligations (such as mandated reporting) which can make their role in prevention more complex than peer intervention alone. These complexities are compounded by the power imbalances present in higher education workplaces, including those between exempt and non-exempt staff with varying levels of education and job responsibilities, between faculty and administrators, and within faculty ranks themselves (e.g., junior or adjunct faculty versus tenured faculty).

  • Faculty and staff operate in a workplace environment with structured HR policies, leadership hierarchies, and legal obligations that govern their responses to harassment, incivility, and discrimination. They also experience workplace-specific forms of bystander intervention, such as addressing inappropriate comments from colleagues, intervening in supervisor-subordinate dynamics, or navigating institutional reporting procedures. These workplace realities require a tailored approach that BITB for college students was not designed to address.

  • While the concept of bystander intervention is valuable across all settings, an effective training program must be audience-specific to ensure relevance, engagement, and meaningful application. That’s why BITB is designed specifically for college students, while Bystanders At Work offers separate, workplace-focused programs for faculty and staff that address their unique roles, responsibilities, and institutional frameworks.
