Know Your Power® to Create a Safer & More Respectful College Community

Know Your Power is one of the first and best evaluated bystander intervention marketing campaigns providing effective sexual and relationship violence prevention strategies.

Know Your Power is a low-cost program to build safe and respectful college communities by increasing the knowledge of how to intervene safely and increase the willingness to intervene.

Know Your Power is based on the premise that all community members have a role and responsibility as part of the community; the importance of a prosocial role is incorporated into each scenario to assist college students in recognizing unacceptable behavior and learning when and how to safely intervene and to support those affected.

An Overview of Know Your Power

Know Your Power was developed by Prevention Innovations Research Center based on in-depth bystander intervention research and focus groups and is exclusively distributed by Soteria Solutions.

Know Your Power is designed to help college campus communities make lasting change through integrated campaigns that achieve high visibility and reach. The consistent and comprehensive messages increase awareness and understanding of what acceptable behavior is and what it is not.

Know Your Power: Scenarios for College Students

Know Your Power is a set of bystander intervention marketing campaigns portraying realistic and provocative scenarios developed and adapted to be appropriate and relevant for college students. The scenarios heighten students’ awareness and knowledge, encouraging them to be willing to safely act and support those affected.

Know Your Power offers your community the ability to select from a large number of scenarios relevant to college students. Each marketing campaign features a scenario to simulate situations where active bystander behavior effects lasting change.

The tool kit includes all the elements a college needs to plan and execute a highly effective and visual campaign for college students. The campaigns are integrated for messages to be visible across a wide variety of mediums.

The Know Your Power marketing campaign tool kit includes:

  • Provocative and realistic scenarios on themes of dating violence, homophobia, transphobia, stalking, sexual harassment, sexual assault and physical assault.

  • Scenarios thoughtfully developed to incorporate diversity, including various college settings. Scenarios include: controlling behavior, being outed, retaliation, bystander strategies at a party, digital harassment, guy talk, face swap porn, assault while drinking and body shaming.

  • Know Your Power imagery for an integrated campaign enabling high visibility and reach.

  • Broad range of customization available. These include your college’s logo, school colors, mascot or incorporate school building names or prominent locations on campus. Some schools have translated scenarios into other languages (e.g., Spanish). Customization may also include contact information for available local resources such as counselors or local rape crisis centers.

  • A comprehensive Know Your Power Implementation Guide to plan and execute each campaign.

    • The guide answers commonly asked questions including:

      • How do we engage the target audience?

      • How long should each campaign last?

      • Where is the best location to implement?

      • How do we evaluate the impact of each campaign?

Know Your Power marketing campaigns are designed to be flexible with campaign images available for each college to apply as they see appropriate, allowing them to best build and maintain awareness of the power a bystander can have to create a safe and respectful learning environment.

Evaluation and Consultation

Soteria Solutions can provide your school and community partners with technical assistance focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of prevention tools and frameworks, compliance strategies, survivor services, research measures and strategic planning. All of which can help you more effectively address incivility, harassment, violence and discrimination in your community. For example:

  • Receive technical assistance grounded in research, theory and evidence-based evaluation.
  • Build capacity to comply with Title IX, VAWA, the Clery Act, Title VII and state laws.
  • Design strategies to create and sustain violence-free learning, working and living environments.

I intentionally sought out a research-based program to help generate dialogue and encourage students to engage and become empowered to exercise their agency. I discovered Soteria Solutions’ Know Your Power® program which includes messages that have enabled us to link many initiatives together in a succinct way that resonates with our students, staff, faculty, and collaborative partners.
